San Antonio Conservation Society Position Statement

We provided the Zoning Commission with a letter of support for amendments that would improve Alta Vista’s Neighborhood Conservation District guidelines.  This revision to the Unified Development Code, which had been placed on the consent agenda, passed unanimously.Alta Vista was one of the first “modern” subdivisions developed to the north of downtown San Antonio.  Between the 1890s and 1920s, it grew up around the streetcar lines serving nearby San Pedro Springs Park.  Read more history.

The Alta Vista Neighborhood Conservation District, designed to protect the neighborhood’s character-defining features, was created in 2003.  Over the next fifteen years, the original district guidelines became less effective at addressing the design issues and development patterns affecting the community.   These amended guidelines will provide a better zoning tool for managing neighborhood change.
