San Antonio Conservation Society Position Statement

City Council

November 1, 2018

We continued to support the landmark designation of two historic houses in the Alta Vista neighborhood.  2511 North Flores has been providing affordable multi-family housing since 1921.   However, its initial construction dates back at least a decade earlier.  800 W. Russell is a 1920s Craftsman bungalow.   The original owner, a woman named Mary Dalehy, contributed to Alta Vista’s development. She even helped get the streetcar line extended to connect this early suburb to downtown.

City Council voted to move both designations forward to the Zoning Commission.  Historic designation will allow the owners to take advantage of tax credits, while preserving housing stock that contributes to Alta Vista’s eligibility as a historic district.

We also supported language in the Short Term Rental ordinance designed to promote good stewardship by resident owners in historic districts.  City Council passed this ordinance 8 to 2, with Councilmen Courage and Brockhouse opposing it.
