Section 106 works because it asks federal agencies to do something simple: stop, look, and listen before harming places Americans value. It gives states, local governments, Tribal Nations, property owners, and communities a voice to preserve historic downtowns, battlefields, burial grounds, and sacred sites and prevent them from being damaged or lost.

Among San Antonio’s historic treasures saved by Section 106 is the St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church Foundations and 1875 Cornerstone.
