Celebrate Black History Month 2023

Tired of waiting for a segregated society to change, Black students took direct action to reclaim equal rights in one of America’s most accessible public places; the store lunch counter.  KSAT 12 highlights two opportunities to learn more, also listed below.

These videos are made possible in part by grants from Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and World Monuments Fund (WMF).

Want to learn more about how the sit-ins affected big cities and college towns across Texas?  The Conservation Society of San Antonio, in partnership with SAAACAM, presents “The Texas Sit-Ins” video series.

On Monday, February 13th, join SAAACAM and IKEA Live Oak in celebrating the opening of the new exhibition at IKEA Live Oak “Black Resistance at the Lunch Counter” with a complimentary breakfast. The exhibit will be available to the public for viewing February 13 through March 16.

Visit the Office of Historic Preservation’s new African American Heritage Initiative website to explore ongoing efforts to preserve San Antonio’s rich African American heritage. Community engagement is key!
