San Antonio Conservation Society Announcement

June 21, 2018

With the unveiling of the Alamo Interpretive Plan draft, we find ourselves going back on the record to defend key concepts in the City Council-approved Alamo Master Plan that pledged to:

  • Enhance connectivity between the site and nearby public spaces (like Main Plaza, La Villita, Hemisfair, and the River Walk).
  • Repurpose the historic Crockett Block, Woolworth, and Palace Theater Buildings into a visitor center and museum.

Local architects, like David Lake and Darryl Ohlenbusch, and City Councilman John Courage have also joined in the public conversation taking place in the media about critical aspects of Alamo Plaza that should be respected and retained.

We are not alone – the Society’s petition is on target to surpass 1000 online signatures today.  But, it’s not about saying “No” – it’s about ensuring that the State works with local residents to find reasonable alternatives to an interpretive plan that threatens to:

  • Put a fence around the plaza and restrict access
  • Move or demolish important historic elements
  • Eliminate connectivity with street closures
