Historic Places - Stevens Building
315 East Commerce Street

Stevens Building pic

Adjacent to the Staacke Building, the Stevens Building was purchased by the San Antonio Conservation Society in 1979 when it was threatened by demolition. Designed by James Riely Gordon, well-known San Antonio architect, the building was built for John James Stevens in 1891, on property belonging to his wife, Bettie Thornton Stevens. Mr. Stevens was prominent in civic affairs, served as postmaster of San Antonio and was also a charter member of the University Club, which had its headquarters and clubrooms in the Stevens Building. The building is constructed of brick with granite detailing. Three canopied bay windows, originally decorating the facade of the building, were removed in an early remodeling, but have now been restored. The San Antonio Conservation Society sold the building to a group of local investors in May 1982. Along with the Staacke Building, the Stevens Building has been restored and adapted for reuse as retail and office space.
