2009 PUBLICATION AWARDS CRITERIA

The San Antonio Conservation Society is pleased to announce that nominations are now being accepted for its 2009 Publication Awards. Organized in 1924, the Conservation Society recognizes significant accomplishments in accordance with its purpose, “ . . . to preserve and to encourage the preservation of historic buildings, objects, places and customs relating to the history of Texas, its natural beauty and all that is admirably distinctive to our State; and by such physical and cultural preservation to keep the history of Texas legible and intact to educate the public, especially the youth of today and tomorrow, with knowledge of our inherited regional values.”

Award: A framed certificate is awarded to up to ten winners annually. Awards will be presented at the San Antonio Conservation Society Publication Awards ceremony luncheon on March 20, 2009.

Purpose: To encourage the publication of materials that preserve, document, and promote the history of Texas by publicly recognizing the creators of such works.

Subjects: The following subject areas are intended as general guidelines only: Architectural History, Biography, Cultural History, Natural History, Regional History, San Antonio History, and State History.

Materials in categories such as Juvenile/Young Adult Literature and Articles/Pamphlets (50 pages or less) may be submitted under any of the subject areas listed above.

A winner may not be named in each subject area or category; conversely, some subject areas or categories may have more than one winner.

Evaluation Criteria: Printed works submitted under any of the above subject areas will be evaluated accordingly: 1.) Content related to the Society’s stated purpose; 2.) Literary quality; 3.) Historical significance; 4.) Use of primary sources; 5.) Originality of approach or subject matter; 6.) Preservation of subject matter that might otherwise be lost; 7.) Significance of visual content, including illustrations, photos, or maps (if used); 8.) Contribution to scholarship or research; 9.) Quality and organization of reference aids (index, notes, bibliography), and 10.) Stimulation of reader/viewer interest.

For materials entered in as Juvenile/Young Adult Literature or Articles/Pamphlets, criteria 4, 8, and 9 will not be used for purposes of evaluation.

Requirements:

1. The competition is open to any scholarly work on Texas history and culture that supports the Society’s stated purpose.

2. Two copies of the work nominated must be submitted with the official nomination form. Official forms are also available from the San Antonio Conservation Society Library (210-224-6163) and on the Society’s website under Events & NIOSA – Publication Awards.

3. To be eligible, the work nominated must have a copyright date less than three years old at the time of nomination (2006 – 2008). Reissued works are generally not considered unless they offer valuable subject matter that has been unavailable for many years. Print entries must have been published in an edition of no fewer than 200 copies.

4. Judging decisions will be made by the Society’s Publication Awards Committee by September 30, 2008. All entrants will be notified by mail as to the decision.

5. Authors and producers will be the primary award recipients, rather than their publishers or other sponsoring organizations. In publications in which illustration and text are interdependent, the artist will also be recognized.

6. Following the Publication Awards ceremony, the San Antonio Conservation Society will retain both copies of the work nominated. The Society reserves the right either to add these works to its own collection or to distribute them to other local libraries.
