Events - Historic Preservation Awards

The purpose of the Historic Preservation Awards is to honor those who have reached the highest level of accomplishment in historic preservation and to recognize the quality of preservation work achieved in the built environment.

The San Antonio Conservation Society congratulates all the winners of the 2010 Historic Preservation Awards.

LOCAL WINNERS

  • John Batot House, 108 Barrera Street – Peter and Lyn Selig. Project architect: Jim Poteet.
     

  • Frank Bradford House, 421 Cedar Street – Elizabeth Llanas. Project architect: José Garcia DeLara.
     

  • Hornbuckle Residence, 502 Corona – Carrla Hornbuckle. Project architect: Jerry Lammers.
     

  • SoFlo Architects Office Campus/Beddell Trailer Company, 1512 S. Flores Street – Magnificent SoFlo Seven, LLC.
    Project architect: Alamo Architects & OCO Architects.
     

  • Pearl Brewery Smokestack, 312 Pearl Parkway – Silver Ventures, LLC. Project architect: Jeffrey Fetzer.
     

  • 1225 South Presa Street – Presa Gardens, LLC. Project architect: Darryl Ohlenbusch.
     

  • Juen House, 625 Shook Avenue – John & Florence Newman Foundation. Project architect: Don B. McDonald.
     

  • Stinson Municipal Airport Administration Building, 8535 Mission Road – City of San Antonio. Project architect: Terry Palmer.

OUT OF TOWN WINNERS

  • Karger Bulding, 723 High Street, Comfort, Texas – Bobby Dent and Joey Story.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD

  • San Antonio River – Museum Reach, 1.33 miles from Lexington Avenue to Josephine Street – City of San Antonio, Bexar County, San Antonio River Authority, and San Antonio River Foundation.

TEXAS PRESERVATION HEROES

  • Paula Allen for ongoing contributions in providing educational and factual historical information to the community through her weekly History Column published in the San Antonio Express-News.
     

  • Félix D. Almaráz, Jr., Ph.D. for lifetime achievements in research and contributions as an educator, author, and historian, preserving the history of Mexico, Texas and the Border Lands.
     

  • Susan Toomey Frost for maintaining the largest collection of San José pottery and tiles; as the author of Colors on Clay: The San José Tile Workshops of San Antonio, and for her community service with local and state preservation organizations and agencies.
     

  • James Lifshutz for seeing possibilities in dilapidated old buildings and putting heart, planning and funding into their sensitive rehabilitation and adaptive use.
     

  • Sylvia Navarro Tillotson for founding the Friends of the Navarro House, recruiting a board of directors, raising $125,000 for the design plan and initiating a scholarship program in 2007 for San Antonio area high school seniors—all in support of the Casa Navarro State Historical Site.

LYNN FORD CRAFTSMAN AWARD

  • Kathleen Trenchard for perpetuating the Mexican folk art tradition of “Papel Picado,” a punched paper craft which dates back to pre-Colombian times. Accomplished artist and author of Mexican Papercutting, her work may be seen at the ATT Center, South Texas Blood and Tissue Center and the Grand Hyatt Hotel in San Antonio.

AMANDA CARTWRIGHT TAYLOR AWARD

  • David Carter for restoration of six historically significant buildings, preserving the character of old San Antonio.
